It was a cold and rainy evening in Healdsburg, California. The rain had been falling for days, barely letting up at all. The dark days accentuated the dark mood of a man who had been alone in a large house for almost three weeks.

William had started a fire in the large rock hearth in the living room to ward off the cold and to give him something to do with his day. He had chopped the wood for the fire out in the rain, next to a worn-down shed, with an old axe, until the entire cord had been split. The wet wood was hard to get burning, but he managed with the aid of some accelerant he had on hand in the workshop.

One of the calluses on his hand had torn and began bleeding long before he was finished, but he didn’t notice it until he got inside and washed his hands in the kitchen sink. The cold had numbed his hands so that he didn’t feel the pain until the fire had warmed him up.

Now his hand throbbed, but he didn’t give it much thought. He stared into the fire. Its hypnotizing dance caused his mind to drift back over the years to days where he would lay in front of this hearth with his wife, wrapped in blankets and talking about their dreams.

Snuggled up in his arms, Marlena would almost always fall asleep listening to William talk. It wasn’t that she’d been bored by what he had to say. She felt so calm lying in his arms, soothed by his tone, it would mesmerize her into a relaxed sleep.

William used to do it on purpose so he could watch his wife while she slept, just for a bit, until her rhythmic breathing would put him to sleep as well. He loved nothing more in the world than to wake up with that girl in his arms.

The thought brought old tears to William’s eyes that he worried might never dry up.

The flash from his datapad pulled William from his thoughts and he picked it up to read Alex’s message.
